Beauty Benefits of Gua Sha

Let’s face it, massaging your face with cold smooth stone paired with your favourite face oil is the perfect way to end a stressful day. The name alone is fun to say aloud, but what is Gua Sha and where does it originate from and what does it mean?

Gua Sha is a technique commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) whereby a tool is used to repeatedly scrape the surface of the skin whilst applying gentle pressure. 

Gua literally means “to scrape” and is used to describe the “skin scraping” action when practising Gua Sha therapy *Sha has several definitions relating to the removal of toxins, relocation of Qi (chi, or life force) and is also used to describe the appearance of skin after a Gua Sha treatment. Think of Gua Sha as a deep tissue massage for your face. 

How does it benefit my skin?

The action of scraping the Gua Sha tool across your face helps increase blood circulation to the skin and encourages lymphatic drainage. All of which have proposed facial skincare benefits from de-puffing the skin, reducing redness and helping manage breakouts. In addition to the skincare benefits, Gua Sha can help relieve muscular tensions in the face and can help alleviate headaches and pain along the jawline. 

How to properly Gua Sha:

1 – Apply a few drops of your favourite facial oil or serum for your specific skin type:

2 – Start at the forehead and scrape upwards from the eyebrows to the hairline.

3 – Move on to the under eye area and cheeks: start at the bridge of the nose in the inner corner of the eye, and glide the Gua Sha under the eye and across the cheekbones.  Apply a lighter pressure to this sensitive area.

4 – Move on to the jawline, and scrape from the chin, up along the jawline, to the earlobes using the side of the Gua Sha with two curves. 

5 – Finish with the neck, and scrape into vertical sections from the base of the neck to the jawline.

6 – Do 4 – 5 strokes of Gua Sha on each area of the face. 

For best results, we suggest indulging in this ancient practice for a few minutes every evening, or at least 2-3 times per week. Combine with a face mask for an at-home facial experience.
